Dare County Sheriff: All road passable but require caution

By on December 24, 2022

(NCDOT NC12)

On the morning of Saturday, Dec. 24, the Dare County Sheriff’s Office shared this update on road conditions in the county.

  • On Colington Rd., there is sand on the road near Colington Pointe. Near Blue Crab Tavern and Billy’s Seafood there is a large amount of ice and slush on the road. Be cautious of ice in all areas that have flooded on Colington Road.
  • In the Manteo/Wanchese/Manns Harbor area, there is ice on the road near The Christmas Shop in Manteo as well as the other areas that flooded near there. Mashoes Road is flooded and there is black ice along the straightaways. The main roads throughout these areas are all clear and passable with possible icy conditions. Be cautious of ice in all areas that have seen flood waters.
  • On Hatteras Island, conditions remain the same as the previous update. NC 12 is still open as of now, however there is slush and ice in multiple places south of the Oregon Inlet Bridge on NC 12.

Please use extreme caution when traveling and be aware of black ice. All roads at this time are open and passable, however drivers need to be on high alert.

As a Colington resident I hope NCDOT surveys the flooding on Colington Road that occurred during the storm. I know the road project is not complete. Lets make sure the engineers are getting it right.

Dare County Sheriff thanks for the updates and please keep them coming for all OBX weather events.
