Logan Day out of hospital, more tests pending

By on January 7, 2023

1/9/23 Update: Manteo High School basketball coach Timmy Charity reports that Logan Day, the player who collapsed during a Jan. 6 game, is out of the hospital. And according to a social media post by his mother Triva on Jan. 8, the tests run by doctors came back normal and he is feeling better. But there are still more doctor visits and tests coming up. She also thanked “everyone who has reached out about Logan. We live in such an amazing community.”

Manteo High basketball player hospitalized after collapse during game

1/7/23: Manteo High School basketball coach Timmy Charity has posted this information about one of his players, senior Logan Day, who collapsed toward the end of the team’s game on Jan. 6 against Pasquotank County that resulted in a 39-37 Manteo win. He asks for prayers for Logan and his family.

In an update posted later on his Facebook page, Charity reported that Logan was sent to CHKD (Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters) for more tests and is feeling better. The only thing they found was his potassium was low, but his blood work had been normal. They are running more tests because he is still having some chest pains.

Here is the Facebook post.

I figured I would comment here since there is so many people hitting me up. Tonight was one of the scariest nights of my coaching career. Nearly the same incident that happened in the NFL a couple days ago without the contact, struck home tonight.

We were in a tight game tonight VS P-tank with about 4:45 seconds left in the 4th and during my timeout, one of my players (Logan) literally collapsed. Thankful for coach Preston Gordon, medical team and EMT’s of P-tank county were right there on sight and responded quickly. After working with Logan, he was sent away on the ambulance and rushed to the hospital in EC. The only info that I have right now is that he is doing a little better, alert and responding. He is having a lot of blood work and X-rays done so please continue to pray for Logan.

After he was sent away, I found out how strong my Manteo High School Boys’ Varsity Basketball squad really was. Shout out to P-tank basketball team and coaches for rallying both teams at half court, joining arms and saying a prayer for our fallen soldier. At that point both teams were sent to the locker room and I was stuck with the decision to finish tonight or come back another and finish. After watching my players in tears and pain, I prayed and left it on them and Logan to make the decision.

Logan told us to finish the game and my players agreed to do so as well. After the grieving and the heartfelt talks, we took the court. Every time out and huddle ended with 1, 2, 3 LOGAN. The boys rallied back and ended up winning a very tight game 39-37.

Moral of the story is, anything can happen at any given time. I pray no one ever has to go through this and I pray everyone continues to pray for Logan and his family. Thank you, Coach Woodley from P-tank for the respect that you showed my squad, in that troubling time. He made it clear that if we wanted to reschedule the game we could, he called me to check on me on the way home and he went to the hospital to check on Logan after game was over! Much respect and love for him!!! Thanks for all the calls and texts. I will keep everyone updated. LOGAN STRONG!!!!

More information if and when it becomes available.
