On Jan. 19, the Town of Nags Head announced this pending paving project that will stretch into the spring and will have impacts on traffic. Here are the details.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is conducting a paving project on South Croatan Highway in Nags Head during winter and spring 2023. Please keep this in mind when traveling the road and be sure to slow down to ensure everyone’s safety.
The improvements include installing new pavement and replacing drainage pipes at West Oak Knoll Drive, Baltic Street, and in front of Nags Head’s town hall.
Prior to paving, the highway’s shoulders will be scraped ahead of milling and filling, which prepares the road for new pavement.
Shoulder scraping will take place first, progressing north from Whalebone Junction (the intersection of the highway with South Virginia Dare Trail and US 64). This work may take several weeks to complete. Outer lane closures are expected in the work zones.
At the beginning of February, work to replace the drainage pipes is expected to begin, proceeding from north to south. Traffic patterns for each of the work areas will be provided in advance of construction.
A start date for the mill and fill part of the project has not yet been finalized due to the work requiring warmer weather for the paving. Work is expected to begin around Gray Eagle Street and progress north.

Barnhill Contracting Company will receive, open, and read publicly all bids received in person in the Training & GPS Technology Room at the main office and listed with the virtual viewing at the link to be posted on Barnhill’s Plan Room.
Bids will not be accepted from bidders that are not pre-qualified. No facsimile or email submissions are permitted. What? Isn’t this supposed to happen in the summer?

The work they did on the bypass through about MP 6 was great. Doing this will help the southern end-hopefully they will finish what is also in between. The bypass has needed work for years-it is good to see it. But it all needs to be completed.

It would be nice if The OBX Voice could get a list of all the projects that are in progress and planned for the OBX, They started in KDH then Stopped and now are frog jumping to Nags Head??? A listing from NCDOT engineer in Manteo should have all the projects and project numbers Available. Thanks
