Celebrate Black History Month by visiting a special exhibit by the Pea Island Preservation Society, Inc. For the month of February our Vault Gallery will feature paintings, photographs, and other information about the story of Keeper Richard Etheridge and the Pea Island Lifesaving Station.
Come look, listen, and learn about the nationās first black Keeper, the all-black crew he commanded, and about the story of integrated crews, known as checkerboard crews, that Keeper Etheridge and others once served on. Checkerboard Crews, a term used to identify integrated crews in the United States Life- Saving Service with white and black surfmen is a poignant reminder of the need to raise awareness.ā
There will be an opening reception on Friday, February 3 from 6pm to 8pm, where visitors can meet members of the Pea Island Preservation Society, Inc. The reception is free and open to everyone.
The Pea Island Preservation Society Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the history of Keeper Richard Etheridge and the Pea Island Lifesavers.
