Kitty Hawk Police Chief Johnson retires on Feb. 1, search on for successor

By on February 1, 2023

Chief Johnson.

As of today, Feb. 1, Kitty Hawk Police Chief Joel Johnson will be retiring from that post and the town is conducting a search for his successor. Back in October, Kitty Hawk broke ground on a new police station at the former site of the Sentara Medical Center.

Here is the information from the town.

After 30 years in law enforcement and nearly 22 years of service with the Kitty Hawk Police Department, Chief Joel Johnson will be retiring effective February 1. Chief Johnson has served as the Town’s Chief for over 10 years and has made numerous positive changes within the department during his tenure as Chief.

During Chief Johnson’s tenure, the department has faced significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, changing national sentiment towards law enforcement, increased drug abuse and growing mental health issues in our community as well as staffing and lack of essential workforce housing. Through it all, he has received numerous commendations recognizing him for his community-oriented approach in helping residents and visitors.

Please join the Town Council and staff in thanking Chief Johnson for his service.  Congratulations on your retirement and your contributions to the Outer Banks community.

The Town is currently accepting applications for qualified Police Chief candidates. During the recruitment process and transition, Lieutenant James Helms has been named Interim Police Chief. He can be reached at jhelms@kittyhawktown.net or 252-261-3895.
