Manteo, First Flight swimmers move on to state championships

The First Flight women’s swimming team finished in third place while the men came in fourth overall in the 3A East Regionals competition held on Feb. 3.  Gray Miller won the diving event, Maura Trivette finished second in the 100 freestyle and the women’s 400 freestyle relay team finished second (Maura Trivette, Lainey Dexter, Lana Walters and Kira Walters).

The First Flight qualifiers for the state championships to held in Cary on Feb. 11 include Gray Miller in diving, Maura Trivette in the 100 and 200 freestyle, Jack Brown in the 500 freestyle and Laney Dexter for the 200 individual medley. All three relay teams for men and women qualified for the states as well.

For Manteo swimmers in the 1A&2A East Regionals, Gwyn Benkusky was victorious to become the 100 freestyle Regional Champion and also took second in the 200 freestyle. The women’s 200 medley relay team (Franni Evans, Gwyn Benkusky, Bella Alexander, Meredith Gaskill) captured third place at the Regionals and is headed to the state tournament next weekend. Meredith Gaskill placed sixth in the 100 butterfly which qualifies her for states.  Ben Hanusik finished fifth in the 500 free at the Regionals, which qualifies him for next weekend’s state championship as well.
