Top First Flight finishers at state track tourney, Morgan Miller wins gold

Freshman Morgan Miller wins the state championship in the 3,200.

Indoor track 4x800 girls relay finished second in the state- Morgan Miller, Lucy Stecher, Moira Furr, Tatum Dermatas.

 

The First Flight High School Indoor Track team hit the podium in multiple events in the NCHSAA 3A State Championships on Feb. 10 in Winston-Salem. The team was led by freshman Morgan Miller, who brought home gold and the state title in the 3,200-meter run.

Miller won a thrilling duel with favorite Bella Wood of powerhouse North Lincoln, clocking 11:29.2 for the metric two-mile, breaking her own First Flight school record along the way. Miller joined Tatum Dermatas, Moira Furr, and Lucy Stecher for another nail biter in the women’s 4×800 meter relay.  In a race that saw multiple changes of lead, the No. 1 ranked Nighthawks fought North Buncombe to the wire, finishing second for the silver medal, 9:56.32 to 9:57.73.

Doubling back after their relay efforts, Dermatas and Furr scored again, taking fifth and seventh in the 1,000-meter run. Despite fielding only four athletes in three events, the Lady Nighthawks scored 24 points and finished eighth of 39 teams in the state meet.

First-year triple jumper Seth Daniels, fresh from setting a First Flight school record in the triple jump of 38’6” and silver medal at the NCC Conference meet, competed in a deep field and jumped 35-8.25, good for 27^th place overall.
