Manteo men and women both win first-round conference tourney basketball contests

The Manteo men’s and women’s basketball teams both won their first-round conference tournament home games on Feb. 14 with victories over Camden. The men took a narrow 45-43 win, moving their overall season record to 16-6. The women had an easier time, toppling Camden by a 64-37 score to improve their season’s mark to 15-5.

Both teams will move on to the conference semifinals against Hertford on Feb. 15, with the contests to be played at Northeastern High School. Women play at 4 p.m. while the men tip off at 8:30 p.m.

Across the bridge, the First Flight High School teams split in their conference tourney games that they hosted on Feb. 14. The men defeated Currituck 93-61 to improve to 16-8 on the season and will next tip off against Northeastern on Feb. 15. The women’s squad lost to Currituck 47-40 and are now 13-8 on the year.

The Cape Hatteras Secondary School women’s team shut down Mattamuskeet 58-12 in a Feb. 14 conference tournament home game. The squad (13-8 on the season) next plays on Feb. 16 against Bear Grass Charter in a contest to be held at First Flight High School. The Hatteras men’s team dropped its conference tournament game to Ocracoke by a 47-42 score.  Ocracoke will play its next conference tournament against Bear Grass Charter on Feb. 16.
