Congratulations to First Flight High School’s Jacob Kresicki, who won the North Carolina 3A High School Wrestling Championship at 113 pounds by an 8-3 margin over Fernando Martinez of Cedar Ridge on Feb. 18 at the Greensboro Coliseum. That title win followed a first-round victory over Xavier Santos of Asheboro and a second-round win over Keaton Crawford of Union Pines. For the season, Kresicki posted a tremendous mark of 37-3.

According to First Flight’s head wrestling coach Russell Kepler, Kresicki, a senior, had wrestled his finals opponent two other other times in the past and had split those matches, which made this win even sweeter. Kresicki will be taking the next step in his wrestling career by attending and wrestling for York College in Pennsylvania.

Other strong First Flight finishers in the state tournament include Azrael Simpson, who finished fifth at 152 pounds, and Trevor Sweitzer, who came in fifth at 182 pounds.  Additional First Flight wrestlers to qualify for the state tournament were Nathan Canning (138 pounds), Kai Reece (170 pounds) and Everest Ovellette (heavyweight). Overall, the First Flight wrestlers finished 9th out of 64 teams at the State Tournament.
