OBX Seashore updates and upcoming events at OBX National Parks

During routine patrols of the beach, Cape Hatteras National Seashore biological technicians collected 93 balloons in February, many of which were Valentine’s Day related. A total of 733 balloons were collected by staff in 2022. (CHNS)

UPDATES
  • In the coming weeks, a contractor will begin to replace the footwells in front of the rows of chairs at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site’s Waterside Theatre. The improvement project is expected to finish prior to the beginning ofĀ The Lost ColonyĀ season.
  • N.C. Department of TransportationĀ is performing required inspections of the Bonner Bridge Pier over the next couple weeks. The inspections may temporarily limit access to sections of the pier. [NCDOT News Release]
  • Cape Hatteras National Seashore invites public review and comments on an environmental assessment (EA) for the construction of a new multi-use pathway in Buxton. The EA is open forĀ public comment through March 28. [News Release]
  • Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, Wright Brothers National Memorial,Ā Outer Banks ForeverĀ andĀ Dare Arts, have partnered to create and launch a new Artist in Community program that gives local artists the opportunity to share their crafts with the public at a family-friendly Earth Day (April 22) celebration on the grounds of theĀ Bodie Island Lighthouse. Fort Raleigh National Historic Site

Park Day Volunteer Beach Cleanup
  • Date: Saturday, April 15 from 10 a.m to 2 p.m.
  • Location: Etheridge Point Beach Access (Pear Pad Rd.)
  • Details:Ā Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, in partnership withĀ American Battlefield TrustĀ andĀ Outer Banks Forever, will host a beach cleanup at Etheridge Point, the park’s soundside beach access. Meet at 10 a.m. to participate in a short presentation about the Civil War Battle of Roanoke Island and the nearby location of a former Civil War camp. All volunteers are encouraged to wear thick-soled footwear, gloves and comfortable work clothing. For more information, contact Tom Avery atĀ thomas_avery@nps.gov.

Modernist Tides: NPS and Mission 66 development on the Outer Banks
  • Date: Friday, March 31 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Location: Kill Devil Hills Library Meeting Room or Online [Registration]
  • Park Ranger: George Jaramillo, historical architect
  • Details:Ā The National Park Serviceā€™s Mission 66 program attempted to modernize the service by introducing new visitor facilities, recreational structures, trails and fixtures that we come to expect from the NPS today. This talk will explore the history and impact of this program across the Outer Banks including the visitor centers at the Wright Brothers Memorial and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site.
