Great Weather and Fast Times for Flying Pirate Half Marathon

Morning sunshine and temperatures in the upper 50s helped runners off to quick start.
The course passes through Nags Hag Woods. The dirt and sand road has number of hills to challenge runners.
The 13.1-mile Flying Pirate half marathon ends at the base of the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devil Hills.
Overall winner Ethan Sommers from Washington, NC turned in a blazing time of 1:14:24. He averaged 5:40 per mile over the course.
Women’s winner Susanna Stroik of Carboro, NC finished in 01:39:51.
Taking second place among women runners, Jennifer Kueck of Nags Head finished in 1:40:10.7

With temperatures in the upper 50s at the 7:00 a.m. start time, the April 23 Flying Pirate Half Marathon offered near perfect conditions for long distance runners. Overall winner Ethan Sommers of Washington, NC finished in 01:14:23.6, averaging a 5:40 per mile over the 13.1-mile course—the fastest time ever been posted for the annual half marathon.

The women’s winner, Susanna Stroik of Carboro, NC finished in 01:39:51.

According to Sommers, this was the first half marathon he had run. His only other long-distance race was a 15K (9.3 mile) event in Charlotte, NC.

The course, beginning behind First Flight Middle School in Kill Devil Hills, passes through Nags Head Woods and ends with an iconic loop around the Wright Brothers Memorial. It is sponsored by Outer Banks Sporting Events.
