With temperatures in the upper 50s at the 7:00 a.m. start time, the April 23 Flying Pirate Half Marathon offered near perfect conditions for long distance runners. Overall winner Ethan Sommers of Washington, NC finished in 01:14:23.6, averaging a 5:40 per mile over the 13.1-mile course—the fastest time ever been posted for the annual half marathon.
The women’s winner, Susanna Stroik of Carboro, NC finished in 01:39:51.
According to Sommers, this was the first half marathon he had run. His only other long-distance race was a 15K (9.3 mile) event in Charlotte, NC.
The course, beginning behind First Flight Middle School in Kill Devil Hills, passes through Nags Head Woods and ends with an iconic loop around the Wright Brothers Memorial. It is sponsored by Outer Banks Sporting Events.
