FFMS Track Athletes Excel at State Championships

On Saturday May 6, seven First Flight Middle School athletes competed in the NCRunners State Middle School Track & Field Championships.

The meet began with the 4×800 meter relay. Kiah Smith, Ella-Rae Reese, Shelby Chercka, and Kayla Folkes took down distance-running powerhouse Cuthbertson Middle School to place 3rd in the state and get on the medal stand. Maddy Beatson placed 2nd in the state in high jump, tying the top jumper but missing out on 1st due to a tie breaker. Avery Thiessen set a new school record in the 200m with a time of 27.19 seconds.

Here’s how the FFMS runners placed overall in the State Championship Meet:
  • Girls 4x800m Relay – 3rdKiah Smith, Ella-Rae Reese, Shelby Chercka, Kayla Folkes
  • Girls 1600m –17thKayla Folkes, 24th Ella-Rae Reese, 29th Kiah Smith (out of 74 runners)
  • Boys 1600m – 32ndAdlai Berryman (out of 102 runners)
  • High Jump – 2ndMaddy Beatson
  • Girls 200m –14thAvery Thiessen (out of 82 runners)
