With the newly renamed Outer Banks Scallywags returning to Dare County this summer to play their home games at Coy Tillett Sr. Memorial Field at Manteo High School, the collegiate summer baseball team is seeking local residents to act as host families for players, coaches and interns.
Here is the information on how you can help.
Host families are the backbone of collegiate summer baseball, providing a safe place for the players, coaches, and interns to stay during our summer season. Host families provide a bed, a place to store belongings, a small amount of space in the pantry/fridge to keep some food, access to restroom/shower facilities and to laundry facilities if available, for a player or two, depending on the space available.
The players will begin arriving the Tuesday following Memorial Day, depending on when their collegiate seasons ends. The summer season runs from June 1 through Aug. 5. The Aug. 5 end date is assuming we go all the way to a game three in the league championship series, something that would be nice, but not guaranteed. Should our postseason dreams of a championship end early, the players will begin leaving within a day or two of our last game.
The players are required to live under your house rules and be respectful of your home, your family and your family activities. Players are expected to provide their own transportation, to keep their room and belongings neat and orderly, and to make provisions for their own meals, health and personal care items, be courteous, helpful and pleasant to their host families, and to minimize the noise level of their activities at all times. We ask our host families to provide a clean and pleasant environment, including a bedroom, for the player staying with them, along with reasonable use of bathroom and laundry facilities.
Having these players staying with us in the community allows them to become integrated into the community more fully, and relationships built during our short summer season last a lifetime. Our host families also receive complimentary season passes, good for all Scallywags home games, and we also have our annual host family appreciation night at the ballpark, where we recognize our host families during the pregame festivities. Finally, we host our end of the season, host family banquet, where we wrap up the season, present our annual team awards to our players, and enjoy one final meal together as a family before the boys of summer head back to their homes to prepare for another school year.
If you would be willing to serve as a host family for the upcoming season, or if you would like more information about becoming a host family, please contact us. Thank you in advance for considering becoming a host family. Email: daredevilsobx@gmail.com
