Manteo to conduct water flow testing downtown on May 24

By on May 23, 2023

The Town of Manteo will be conducting water flow testing in the downtown area on Wednesday, May 24, 2023 beginning at 11:00 PM. This testing is necessary to determine available water main fire flows for fire suppression purposes.

During the flow testing process, water from 3 – 4 fire hydrants will temporarily accumulate on the roadway, although it should not prohibit passing vehicles from travel. Affected areas include streets around Old Tom, Fernando Street, Agona Street, Sir Walter Raleigh Street, and Queen Elizabeth Avenue.

While the water delivered to you is normally clear, after flow testing the water in the affected area(s) can cause discoloration, likely lasting into mid-day May 25 or later. Though the water may be discolored, it remains safe to drink. It is advisable to avoid washing clothes, especially white fabrics beginning May 24, 2023 at 11:00 PM until May 25, 2023 at 5:00 PM or until the discoloration clears from the water system in the affected areas.  If you experience a problem with discolored water coming from your tap, first run your Cold-water tap (preferably from a bathtub spigot or faucet without an aerator) for up to five minutes.

Severe weather on May 24 will push the flow test evaluation to Thursday, May 25 at 11:00 PM, and a no-wash advisory will remain in place through Friday, May 26, at 5:00 PM.
