The unbeaten Manteo High School Women’s soccer team (23-0-2) is moving on to the Regional Championship Round of 2A State Tournament after defeating Raleigh Charter 1-0 on May 25, scoring the game’s lone goal in the first half. In its first four tournament games, the Manteo squad has given up a total of just two goals.
With Thursday’s win, No. 3 seed Manteo becomes one of the four teams left in in the tournament and will play on the road at No. 1 seed Clinton at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30. The winner of that contest will go on to play for the State Championship and the big trophy.

Behind the Times
When did high school sports teams become women and men rather than girls and boys?

It’s a fair question, Behind. I have at times, gone back and forth. I ended up deciding that by the time you are 16, 17 or 18, girls and boys sounded a bit condescending. Wish there was a better term to bridge the gap.
