Scallywags drop opener, but fog has the last say

Summer collegiate wooden-bat baseball returned to the Outer Banks on June 1 in a game that was actually fogged out—the umpires calling it in the sixth inning after a high fly ball was lost in the heavy haze enveloping the field.

At that point, the Outer Banks Scallywags (the rebranded version of the Outer Banks Daredevils) were trailing the Edenton Steamers by a score of 10-1, the visiting Steamers effectively putting the contest away with a six-run outburst in the second inning. The game was played at Coy Tillett Sr. Memorial Field in Manteo, a facility that is a marked improvement over the Kill Devil Hills complex where the Daredevils played.

One positive note was that the lone Scallywags’ run came on a homer by Hayden Friese. But the most positive note was that the summer sport has returned to Dare County, complete with games and fan participation, a PA announcer speaking in pirate-ese, team honcho Mike Dooley dressed like one of Blackbeard’s boys and “Doc” Sawyer playing the tuba during a musical interlude. Going forward, it’s also unlikely that we’ll see the bizarre weather conditions that so affected the opening game.

The Scallywags next play on Saturday, June 3 at the Tarboro River Bandits. Their next home game is Monday, June 5 at 7 p.m. against that same Tarboro squad
