The undefeated Manteo High School Women’s soccer team permanently etched its 2023 season into sports history by winning the North Carolina 2A State Championship in Greensboro on Saturday, June 3 by a score of 5-3 over powerhouse defending champs Wheatmore.
Both teams were undefeated coming into the contest. Only Manteo emerges with that record unblemished, at a remarkable 25-0-2. For Manteo, it was a gritty effort in which the players found themselves coming back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to take charge later in the game.
In their remarkable title run, the Manteo women defeated South Granville, 9-0; Durham: NCSSM 3-0; East Carteret, 11-2; No. 1 seed Clinton, 2-1; and finally, defending champs Wheatmore 5-3.
In a Voice interview in late May before the playoffs began, Manteo head coach Ralph Cleaver, who was named North Carolina 2A Soccer Coach of the Year for public schools, bluntly and simply stated that “our goal is to be state champs.”
Mission accomplished. And congratulations to the coaches, players and everyone affiliated with the team, on an extraordinary season for the ages.
