On Aug. 19, the Dare County Schools issued this update on the “mold mitigation and air quality restoration and air quality control restoration efforts at First Flight Elementary School (FFES) and First Flight Middle School (FFMS) campuses.”
During an emergency meeting of the Dare County Board of Education on Aug. 16, the board, at Superintendent Steve Basnight’s request, approved spending about $933,000 to hire a company, Builder Services, to immediately address humidity control and mold cleanup problems created by inoperable boilers in the two schools. This phase of the work is expected to be completed by the start of school on Aug. 28.

After conducting a thorough inspection of both school buildings Thursday, Aug. 18, Builder Services developed an equipment location map and began installing and running dehumidification equipment. This ongoing effort has vastly improved the measured humidity levels throughout both schools. Once humidity levels were properly maintained, crew members began meticulously cleaning air ducts and returns using HEPA-vacuums, as well as furniture. Air-scrubbers were also strategically positioned throughout the buildings to purify the air.
An industrial hygienist who specializes in air quality testing, collected samples across the buildings Thursday that were sent off for analysis. Dare County Schools is currently awaiting those results. During this time, maintenance staff from Dare County Schools began washing coils in HVAC units, replacing ceiling tiles, and cleaning HVAC vents and returns within gymnasium ceilings.
The Incident Response Team convened Friday at noon to review Builder Services progress report and will continue to receive status updates during virtual meetings held Sunday, Aug. 20 and Monday, Aug. 21. Dare County Schools will provide further updates following Monday’s meeting.

and the missing boiler parts were part of the original contract for the boilers?.. How long have they been on back order?…if a contractor failed to fulfill his contract why would the school district assume the costs for remediation?…

It seems odd that NC school systems got COVID money to upgrade / replace HVAC systems specifically to address filtration problems . Wonder where that money went … FYI the mold had be identified and cleaned previously.
