The Dare County Schools issued this Aug. 21 update on “emergency mold mitigation and air quality restoration services” at First Flight Middle and Elementary Schools one week before the beginning of the school year. While still awaiting the results of air quality testing, the district expressed confidence the schools would be cleared to open on time.
During an Aug. 16 emergency meeting, the Dare County Board of Education approved a $933,000 contract with Builder Services to begin immediate work on the mold and humidity problems.
Here is the Aug. 21 update.
Emergency mold mitigation and air quality restoration services at First Flight Elementary (FFES) and Flight Middle (FFMS) are on schedule to be completed and ready for air quality testing by the end of the day Monday, Aug. 21.
Mold mitigation and air quality control experts from Builder Services are finalizing cleaning efforts with FFES approximately 95% complete and FFMS at 90% complete. Based on their positive progress reports, the district is confident both schools will be cleared to open following a confirmed air quality report. Staff are scheduled to return Wednesday, Aug. 23; prior to the first day of school on Monday, Aug. 28.
FFES and FFMS will postpone their Aug. 24 open house events to allow teachers additional time to reset their classrooms after the extensive cleaning process. School principals will announce updated event details with students and their families soon. Dare County Schools maintenance staff are working in tandem with Builder Services to clean the remaining HVAC vents and returns in FFMS’ gym and cafeteria with HEPA vacuums. Maintenance staff are also working to replace air filters, coils, and stained ceiling tiles, as well as seal off porous interior surfaces.
During inspection, a damaged drainpipe was identified as an area of concern. Maintenance staff are working on repairing the pipe and rerouting it away from the building to prevent future moisture retention and mold growth. Dare County Schools expects to receive the initial air quality test results this evening that were taken prior to cleanup.
A second industrial hygienist will be at both schools Tuesday, Aug. 22 to take on-site readings. Builder Services is also conducting testing and will provide the district and staff members with air quality level reports in each room before and after restoration efforts.
The Incident Response Team met today at noon to discuss updates and communication plans. Sheila Davies, Dare County’s Director of Health and Human Services, announced that her department will meet with Builder Services to tour the schools and review air quality reports Tuesday, Aug. 22 at 9 a.m. The team plans to meet again Tuesday afternoon.
