Update: In an interview with the Voice, Colington Fire Chief Glenn Rainey said that three of the four condo units were occupied at the time of the fire, and all occupants got out safely. Of the four units, two sustained heavy damage, one sustained moderate damage and one received very minor damage. He estimated that the fire was extinguished by 7:30 p.m., lauding the teamwork of the many responders and adding that “I am pleased with the effort. It could have been a total loss all the way around and it wasn’t.”
Multiple responders from Southern Shores to Roanoke Island helped battle a fire at a four-unit condo building in the Colington Pointe subdivision that began on the afternoon of Thursday Aug. 24. According to Lt. Andy Creech of the Dare County Sheriff’s Department, all residents of the building were safely evacuated and there were no significant injuries.
Creech said the blaze began at about 4 p.m. and that the fire was now completely out. Firefighters from Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Colington, Nags Head and Roanoke Island responded to the blaze. Dare County Fire Marshal Steven Kovacs was reportedly at the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
