Dare County Schools issued this release on Friday, Aug. 25 about the mold mitigation and air quality work being done to open First Flight Middle and Elementary Schools in time for the new school year. The problems were caused by inoperable boilers in both buildings, and on Aug. 16, the Dare County Board of Education authorized spending about $933,000 to hire a company to fix the humidity and mold problems. The Aug. 25 release indicates that while First Flight Elementary School is completely clear, more cleaning and air quality testing will occur in one room at the First Flight Middle School.

Mold mitigation experts have completed cleanup work at First Flight Elementary School. All rooms in the building have passed air quality assessments and reopened. Dare County Schools anticipates the remaining room at First Flight Middle School to reopen Aug. 29. One room at First Flight Middle School will be cleaned over the weekend and retested Monday morning. Dare County Schools expects to receive air quality lab results by Aug. 29.
Throughout the cleaning process, there has been no air exchange between this room and other areas of the building. The room will remain closed until completely cleared by industrial hygienists. Dare County Schools received clearance from two air quality vendors to reopen both schools Aug. 22. The remaining room cleaning will not interfere with the first day of school starting Aug. 28. Dare County School still expects to receive a detailed written report from air quality vendors next week that will include air quality readings throughout both buildings. These reports will be shared with school staff and the public as soon as they become available.

I am having a problem with the statement that the boilers caused this problem, Have always through that boilers provide Heat and steam. I can understand if the Chillers for the AC broke down and was allowing humidity to build up but would like to know if there were anyone in the buildings and that they did not notice anything like the mold smell??
