On Aug. 28, the Dare County Schools issued an update on the efforts at mold mitigation and air quality at First Flight Middle and Elementary Schools. The issue emerged into public view on Aug. 16 when the Dare County Board of Education approved spending about $933,000 to immediately address humidity control and mold cleanup problems created by inoperable boilers in the two schools in time for the new school year.
The release indicates that the cleanups at both schools have now been completed and that the boilers will be installed by the end of the month. Here is the information.
Mold mitigation experts completed cleanup work at First Flight Middle School (FFMS) over the weekend. All rooms in the building have passed air quality assessments and received clearance to reopen. One room at FFMS was recleaned over the weekend and retested by industrial hygienists this morning. Air quality vendors shared the room’s lab results this afternoon and granted Dare County Schools clearance to reopen the room tomorrow morning.
Dare County Schools received clearance from two air quality vendors to reopen both schools Aug. 22, with the exception of one room in each school building. The two remaining rooms have both passed air quality evaluations, rendering both campuses safe and mold-free.
The boiler replacement project at both campuses, while necessary for the long-term functionality of the buildings, temporarily disrupted the control of humidity within the schools, leading to damp conditions and isolated instances of surface mold growth earlier this month. Dare County Schools has received the manufactured component needed to complete the installation of FFES’ and FFMS’ boilers. The district’s maintenance department estimates the boilers at both schools will be installed and inspected by Thursday, Aug. 31. Builder Services will continue to assist with humidity control until the project is completed.
