Seven different high schools in Northeastern North Carolina met at Manteo High School on Wednesday, Sept. 6 to participate in a cross-country competition. The sun was bright, the air was thick, and the temperature approached 100 degrees.
The 5,000-meter course took the individual runners and teams completely around Manteo High School three times, with the final lap being completed on the school’s athletic track.
The top 10 spots for both the men and women divisions were dominated by First Flight and Manteo. Judah Lacroix of First Flight edged Hunter Swann of Camden by just one second on the men’s side with an 18-minute posting time. Manteo’s Samuel Head finished 5th in 18 minutes and 29 seconds. Deacon Parker, Alex Lutz, Chase Matis, and Liam Minnich performed well for First Flight High School, as did Ezekiel Leary for Manteo.
Morgan Miller of First Flight coasted to a 19 minute 51 second first-place finish on the women’s side, beating her teammate Moira Furr by 30 seconds. Madison Flynn of Manteo placed 3rd in the race. Manteo’s Meredith Gaskill and Mackenzie Flynn finished 4th and 7th respectively, while Kayla Folkes, Nellie Hall, Shelby Chercka, and Alexa Hallac of First Flight impressed with their results.
Other top ten finishers were Josh Harvill of John A. Holmes and Brenna Gutierrez of Camden County.
