Charges pending in Aug. 10 Manteo shooting

Victim has been released from hospital

Manteo Police Investigator Tony Corbin says that charges stemming from an Aug. 10 shooting that hospitalized one woman “are being finalized,” and that the investigation includes the “possibility of multiple arrests.”

In a Sept. 11 interview with the Voice, Corbin added that the incident, which occurred on the 600 block of Sir Walter Raleigh Street, was the result of “an internal family feud that has been going on for years and just boiled over that night.” He added that it was “an isolated incident” that presents no wider threat to the community.

The woman who was hospitalized did not have life-threatening injuries and was released not long after that hospitalization, according to Corbin. Police were not releasing her name at this time.

He also stated that the Manteo Police Department has “been consulting the District Attorney’s Office throughout the investigation.”

On Aug. 11, the day after the shooting, the Town of Manteo released a statement indicating that the local police department “stands ready to help mediate disagreements in our community and discourages resorting to any violence, including gun violence.”

The Town also thanked other first responders and agencies, including Dare County Sheriff’s Office, Roanoke Island Volunteer Fire Department, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Nags Head Police Department, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Dare County Emergency Medical Services, and the Outer Banks Hospital.

Sadly, an arrest should have been made on the date of the shooting. This smacks of incompetence and negligence.

Wow. Don’t arrest anyone for a shooting, but arrest and write traffic tickets 24 . Traffic tickets are a much higher priority than a shooting. Right?

So many people on the Outer Banks with apparent bones to pick and bias to air on behalf of our law enforcement and judicial system. How about walk a mile in their shoes, or as my drill sergeant used to sing, “pick up a weapon and follow me.”

Don’t just be a loud mouthed, know-it-all. Took me no time to find lots of opportunities where folks with great ideas and wonderful opinions could really “make an impact”. There are volunteer opportunities for you folks too old, too sick, or too logic-challenged also, so don’t feel left out. Put up or shut up.

The Town of Nags Head seeks highly qualified professional and motivated police officer candidates to work in our resort community. The Nags Head Police Department is a modern, well-equipped, full-service law enforcement agency.

On Aug. 11, the day after the shooting, the Town of Manteo released a statement indicating that the local police department “stands ready to help mediate disagreements in our community and discourages resorting to any violence, including gun violence.” ***There continues to be a very serious disconnect between those in “charge” and those living on the island. It broke my heart to hear about those involved in this and how their lives will be changed forever.

from the article: ‘the local police department “stands ready to help mediate disagreements in our community and discourages resorting to any violence, including gun violence.”’ … the police department DISCOURAGES resorting to any violence? doesn’t sound like a full-throated condemnation of violence. Either this department needs a new PR rep or their position on violence is not serious enough

Reading remains fundamental, my friends. The police made no statement whatsoever about violence. The Town of Manteo issued an appropriate governmental statement about the incident. Meanwhile, the officers and civilians of the Manteo Police Department simply continue to 24/7, 365. A large majority of us are very grateful for their service.
