Dangerous rip currents at all area beachesUpdate: As of the afternoon of Sept. 13, the National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Warning for oceanside areas ranging from Cape Lookout to Duck. Moderate coastal flood of 2-4 ft, above ground is possible with likely impacts on NC-12.
At about 9 a.m. on Sept. 13, Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson issued this update on ocean conditions and flooding concerns.
In addition to the High Surf Advisory for large breaking waves of 7 to 12 feet in the surf zone, and the Beach Hazards Statement for dangerous rip currents we are now under a Coastal Flood Watch with 2 to 3 feet of inundation above ground level possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways around high tide. The coastal flood watch runs from tomorrow afternoon through Saturday morning.
Conditions could lead to travel impacts along vulnerable sections of NC12 particularly during high tide. Oceanfront locations—like the northern end of Rodanthe and parts of Buxton on Hatteras Island—where there is no protective dune could become inundated with ocean water.
Residents and visitors in vulnerable areas should take action to protect property and relocate before structures become surrounded by ocean water. At this time, soundside impacts are not anticipated.
Ocean conditions will continue to worsen today and into the weekend keeping the ocean unsafe for swimming into the weekend.

Overwash is vital for the survival of barrier islands, it builds elevation and allows growth of island on the soundside. Erosion is directly caused by dune-lines, proven over and over every season, also the Army Corp of Engineers have scientifically proven it..
Best thing we can do for our island is to let the overwash happen and let it flow. Dune lines are strangulating us.
