HIGH rip current risk continues today at all area beaches including Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Pea Island, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras Village and Ocracoke. Swells from distant Hurricane Lee are bringing powerful rip currents as well as dangerous shorebreak to all beaches from Duck to Ocracoke. Ocean conditions are unsafe. Obey RED Flags, stay out of the water!

Strongest rip currents often occur a couple hours either side of low tide, which is around 3 pm today.

Sunny skies today with temperatures around 80. Northwest winds at 5 to 10 mph. Expect surf heights of 6 to 9 feet, subsiding to 5 to 8 feet at all beaches. Water temperatures: Duck Pier…76. Jennettes Pier…76. Oregon Inlet Marina…75. Rodanthe Pier…77, Avon Pier…82.

Ocean Rescue staffing is at off season levels. Many beaches that had lifeguard stands are now unguarded or covered by a roving patrol.
