Shirley M. Washabaugh, a beloved member of her community, peacefully passed away on September 21, 2023, in Elizabeth City, NC, at the age of 86. Born on June 1, 1937, in Dorchester, MA, Shirley’s life was marked by dedication, warmth, and an unwavering devotion to her loved ones.
Shirley dedicated thirty-six years of her career as a retail manager at Navy Exchange, displaying remarkable professionalism and commitment throughout her tenure. Her diligent work ethic and natural leadership skills earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues. Outside of her professional life, Shirley found joy in pursuing her passions. She possessed a graceful talent for dancing, regularly lacing up her roller skates and gliding across the floor with an enchanting finesse. In addition, she found solace in the art of fishing, becoming a skilled fisherwoman who relished the tranquility of nature and the thrill of the catch.
Shirley was a devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church, where her faith provided her with strength and guidance throughout her life. Additionally, she held a cherished lifetime membership in The Order of Eastern Star #102, in Monroe, WA, exemplifying her commitment to service and sisterhood.
Shirley’s warm and compassionate spirit extended to her family and friends, who will forever treasure their memories with her. She is survived by her loving daughters, Debbie A. Whitbeck (Joseph) of Princeton, IN and Donna M. Wicklund, of Elizabeth City, NC; son, John Young Washabaugh of North Reading, MA; sister, Carolyn Lawson of Elizabeth City, NC; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and loving long-term caregiver who was like family, Julia Swain. Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ronald Washabaugh; parents, Edward P. Barton and Mary E. Crosby Barton; brothers, Eddie Barton and Billy Barton; brother-in-law, David Lawson; and son-in-law, David Wicklund.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Lezlie Harvey officiating.
