The Town of Manteo Water and Sewer Department will conduct unidirectional hydrant flushing on the section of Sir Walter Raleigh Street between Uppowoc Avenue and Queen Elizabeth Avenue. They will plan on flushing tomorrow, Tuesday, September 26, 2023 from 3:30 AM to 6:00 AM.
Unidirectional flushing will be used to flush the water main in one direction by closing connected looped water main valves allowing the internal volume of the main to be cleaned more effectively. During the flow testing process, water from the fire hydrants will temporarily accumulate on the roadway, although it should not prohibit passing vehicles from travel.
While the water delivered to you is normally clear, after flushing the water in the surrounding area(s) can cause discoloration. Though the water may be discolored, it remains safe to drink. It is advisable to avoid washing clothes, especially white fabrics, until the discoloration clears from the water system in the affected areas. If you experience a problem with discolored water coming from your tap, first run your Cold-water tap (preferably from a bathtub spigot or faucet without an aerator) for up to five minutes.
