High rip current risk from Duck to Buxton, moderate risk south of Cape Hatteras

September 29 Morning Beach Conditions

HIGH rip current risk at the beaches of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Pea Island, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, and Buxton. Ocean conditions will bring powerful rip currents and large breaking waves from Duck to Buxton. Ocean swimming is not recommended, obey RED flags and stay out of the water!

MODERATE rip current risk south of Cape Hatteras including Frisco, Hatteras Village, & Ocracoke. Only experienced surf swimmers who know how to escape a rip current should enter the water. Never swim alone, always take flotation!

Strongest rip currents often occur a couple hours either side of low tide, which occurs at 2 pm today.

Partly sunny skies today with a slight chance of showers and temperatures in the low to mid 70s. North winds around 15 mph. Water temperatures: Duck Pier…72. Jennettes Pier..72. Oregon Inlet Marina…72. Avon Pier…75.

Ocean Rescue staffing is at off season levels. Many beaches that had lifeguard stands are now unguarded or covered by a roving patrol.
