The undefeated First Flight men’s soccer team allowed its first goal of the playoffs, but still moved on to the fourth round of the NCHSAA 3A state championships after Monday’s challenging 3-1 win over East Wake. The top-seeded Nighthawks, now 19-0-1 for the season, play host to No. 5 seed Southern Durham at 6 p.m. on Thursday in the east region semifinals.

Junior Nathan Tsonev scored in the opening minutes off a pass from senior Kai Reece for a quick 1-0 lead. “It felt amazing making the first shot of the game because all my teammates were hyping me up,” Tsonev said. “Being up so early in the game makes us feel really good and more confident.”

For the first time in the playoffs, though, the Nighthawks allowed a goal, too, and East forced a 1-1 tie. But senior Cam Summerton found the back of the net for a 2-1 halftime lead and fellow senior Curren Breiholz scored late in the second half to clinch it.

East’s offense was the best FFHS had faced so far in the playoffs after a pair of easy wins in the first two rounds.

“After letting one through, I knew I couldn’t let it get in my head, so I pushed it to the side and saved every single one that came my way,” said junior keeper Colin Rhodes, who was named the MVP after the contest. “Being MVP of the game felt good to come back and make some great saves after letting one in the goal, but my team trusted me.”

Coach Juan Ramirez was pleased with the final score, especially against a tough team and what he saw as a slow start.  “We had a not-so-good warmup, so I pulled them aside and told them. ‘don’t think this team is going to let you guys walk over them.’ It’s playoffs – anybody can score, and anyone can win a game,” Ramirez said. “Tonight we saw different styles of soccer, different methods, different ways that they move the ball. So they help us adjust and prepare us for any game coming to us.”

Southern Durham won 2-1 at No. 4 CB Aycock on Monday and enters with a record of 20-2-2. Thursday’s winner advances to the state Final Four against the winner of No. 2 Greenville Rose and No. 11 Jacksonville. Games in the western half of the bracket feature No. 1 Hickory vs. No. 4 Hibriten and No. 11 Enka vs. No. 18 North Iredell.
