First Flight takes 3A soccer title

By Mark Jurkowitz | Outer Banks Voice

Call us the County of Champions. For the second time this year, a Dare County high school has won the State Championship in soccer as the First Flight High School men’s squad completed an unbeaten season and a dominant playoff run with a 3-0 win over Hickory in Greensboro on Saturday, Nov. 18

First Flight entered the title game with a virtually unblemished 21-0-1 record, the only non-victory being a regular season tie with Manteo. They entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the East Region of the 3A bracket while finals opponent Hickory was the No 1 seed in the West Region.

According to reporting on the High School OT site, the team’s goal scorers in the championship contest were Nathan Tsonev, Curren Breiholz and Mark Hernandez. Goal-keeper Colin Rhodes was named game MVP.

In the six tournament wins that brought them the state title, First Flight outscored its opponents by a stunning 26-2 margin. The First Flight men’s team last won a soccer State Championship in 2016 and this year marks the sixth time in a decade that the local soccer powerhouse has made it to the finals game.

In an interview with the Voice shortly before the beginning of the playoffs, Head Coach Juan Ramirez was optimistic about his team’s chances in the tournament, stating that “I think we have great potential. It’s a good group of young men, very cohesive, we play well together, they really push each other. They’re very good friends.”

In taking home the trophy, the First Flight men’s team joins the Manteo High School women’s team, which captured the State 2A soccer title on June 3 by defeating defending champ Wheatmore in the final, 5-3. That Manteo team also finished its dream season with an undefeated 25-0-2 record.

Congratulations all around to a First Flight team that just concluded its own dream season in spectacular style.

MaxPreps is the premier organization that reports on high school sports across the nation. Their rankings are computer generated, and they include all classes including both public and private schools in their rankings. And right now they rank First Flight as the fifth best team in the state and the 32nd best team in the nation. First Flight will undoubtably move up in the final polls. All NC teams nationally ranked above First Flight lost in the playoffs. Rabun Gap is actually in Georgia and I don’t know why they are listed with the North Carolina schools. Don’t be surprised to see First Flight emerge as the top team in the state and in the top 25 in the nation.
