The First Flight Men’s and Women’s varsity basketball teams won their contests with rival Manteo on Jan. 5—the men winning 86-41 and the women prevailing 57-28.
Varsity Women’s Head Coach Ray Richards discussed his thoughts after the game.
“We played really well but, there is always room for improvement. My players have worked so hard but there are always the few things that we can fix to be better,” Richards said. “No one is perfect, and you can always have areas for continued development. All of the girls play very well, they had the mentality going into this game that they were going to win. and they did.”
Varsity Men’s Head Coach Chad Williams had this to say following the contest.
“We’ve had a very difficult schedule. And you know, it’s a really big game for our boys playing against Manteo and for us to come out and play like we did was exciting to see,” Williams said. “I told these kids to play loose and play aggressive, play ready to win, don’t play scared, and take advantage of every opportunity that you get.”
Williams also talked about Mason Dobie scoring his 1,000th career point during the game.
“Getting to celebrate Mason for his 1,000 points was incredible. But I always tell my kids it’s an individual award, but it is a team effort. A lot of people sacrifice to make sure that he gets that because he takes shots that other people could take. But he also has worked his butt off to be in this position, but the best is yet to come.”
“It felt pretty cool celebrating my 1000 points” Dobie said. “I was just happy we won. We’ve had a bad record right now, so we just had to get back on track. My favorite thing about tonight was getting to sit on the bench and watch our underclassmen play and work hard.”
The First Flight junior varsity teams also came out on top. JV girls won with a score of 40-21, and JV boys won 51-39.
