First Flight High wrestlers take East Regionals, send nine to States

First Flight High School’s wrestling team continued its impressive season, winning the men’s NCHSAA 3A East Regionals on Saturday, Feb. 10. The Nighthawks bested all 27 other high schools in the region. First Flight finished with a total of 157 team points, well ahead of second place Jacksonville with 112. The Nighthawks are now the three-time defending Regional Champions.

Out of 14 weight classes, an outstanding eight FFHS wrestlers qualified for the State Championships. Those headed to the Greensboro Coliseum on February 15 include Gavin Hanks (120 pounds), Khalel Sibugan (126), Nathan Canning (138), Azrael Simpson (144), Dillon Francis (157), Kai Reece (175), Lucas Sumners (190), and Everest Oullette (HWT).

In addition, representing FFHS at the Women’s State Championships will be Skyla Simpson, who won the 120-pound Regional Championship on Feb. 3.

“The team has trained hard and I’m proud of their accomplishments,” said Head Coach Russell Kepler. “Sending nine athletes to States shows the team’s collective high level of commitment and determination.” Added Assistant Coach Jay Hawes: “We’ve got one big weekend left in the season. I think we’re ready, and I’m looking forward to it.”
