The latest data on the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) Medicaid Expansion Enrollment Dashboard shows that 867 Dare County adults between the ages of 19-64 have signed up for Medicaid expansion since the state began that program on Dec. 1, 2023. The number of enrollees was updated at the beginning of February.

According to a 2019 study on Medicaid expansion by the Milken Institute School of Public Health, it was estimated that as of 2022, a total of 2,049 Dare County residents would be eligible for Medicaid Expansion coverage. It the estimates are accurate, about 40% of those eligible for that coverage have signed up to date.

According to the NCDHHS dashboard, 497 adults in Currituck have enrolled though the expanded program through the beginning of this month. That also represents about 40% of those who are estimated to be eligible, based on the Milken estimates. In Hyde County, 158 adults have thus far enrolled through Medicaid expansion, about 35% of those eligible, according to the study.

The NCDHHS reports that as of Feb. 1, a total of 346,408 newly eligible North Carolina residents have enrolled in Medicaid through the expansion option, which represents well more than half of the 600,000 who are eligible.

With the expansion, adults may be able to enroll in Medicaid coverage with higher incomes than previously required to obtain coverage—now up to 138% of the federal poverty line, with singles earning about $20,000/year or families of three earning about $34,000/year.

“NC Medicaid covers most health services. It includes doctor visits, check-ups, emergency care, hospital services, maternity and postpartum care, vision and hearing services, prescription drugs, behavioral health, preventive and wellness services, dental care, medical-related devices and more. There is no monthly fee and copays are never more than $4,” the NCDHHS states on its website.

That Feb. 14 NCDHHS release also said that since Dec. 1, Medicaid had covered more than 265,000 prescriptions for new enrollees for things like heart health, diabetes, seizures and other illnesses and covered more than $4.8 million in claims for dental services since Dec. 1.
