Second housing task force meeting cancelled for Ray White funeral

First meeting of the Dare County Housing Task Force.

Update: Date Commissioner Chair Bob Woodard says the task force meeting was cancelled so members can attend the Feb. 20 funeral of Ray White, a pillar of the OBX community, who passed on Feb. 18.

Dare County announced yesterday that the second meeting of the county’s Housing Task Force, scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 20, has been cancelled.

The Task Force, which held its first meeting on Jan. 18, has roughly two dozen members‚ÄĒincluding town and county officials, business owners, members of the Dare County Board of Education, Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce and Outer Banks Visitors Bureau. There are also residents of Wanchese, northern Roanoke Island and Hatteras Island.

The idea of creating the Task Force was announced at an Oct. 2 Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting. Its creation represents a significant shift in strategy behind the county‚Äôs frustrating efforts to create new long-term housing for the workforce. Originally, the county had hoped to build these housing developments by creating partnerships for that purpose with two entities‚ÄĒthe Woda Cooper Company and Coastal Affordable Housing LLC. But efforts by those two organizations to generate housing in Nags Head, Manteo and Kill Devil Hills all ran afoul of local opposition.

This is completely unrelated to this article. Please do not let Justin’s story slip through the cracks. There’s a lot of rumors circulating around the island. Many of us are very disappointed how the local investigators have handled this so far. I’m praying and hoping there is more going on than what is being said. This really isn’t a comment. It is more of a plea to y’all at the voice to please keep a light on this. Thank you for reading this Mark.
