NWS issues High Surf and Coastal Flood Advisories for Hatteras Island

By on February 22, 2024

The National Weather Service at Newport/Morehead City has posted a High Surf Advisory and a Coastal Flood Advisory for Hatteras Island. The High Surf Advisory is in effect until 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23. The first Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22, while a second one will be in effect from 5 a.m. till 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 23.

For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves of 6 to 11 feet are predicted in the surf zone. For the Coastal Flood Advisory, 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

Expected impacts include flooding of lots, parks, and roads (including NC 12) around high tide due to wave run-up and areas of ocean overwash across compromised dune structures. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion are predicted.

If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
