COA and R.D. Sawyer Ford to offer vehicle service technician courseĀ

By on February 24, 2024

The College of the Albemarle, in conjunction with the R.D. Sawyer Ford dealership in Manteo, will offer students a Ford Vehicle Service Technician class that begins onĀ March 4 and ends on May 27.

The class is a hands-on training program that will be held at the R.D. Sawyer Service Department. At the end of the course, a student will have completed the Technician Training Certificate issued by the Ford Motor Company. The students will also receive a COA certificate of completion. The class will also have classroom training through the STARS computer program. The student, upon completion, will receive a Certification from the STARS program.

The class will have two sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays. The course fee is $395. Please ask about the Dare Guarantee and other scholarships available for students registering for this Automotive Service Technician class. We have a class capacity of eight students and encourage registration early.

The lead instructor for this class is Vic Jantti, Parts and Service Director, R.D. Sawyer Ford Dealership. Robin Sawyer, Operations Manager at R.D. Sawyer Ford dealership, has been the direct point of contact for College of The Albemarle.

Jantti will work with two groups of students who will be on-site in the secondary garage that he prepared for these students. These students will get 96 hours of on-the-job instruction during the semester. In addition to the on-site instruction, students must complete the Level 1 Technician Training in STARS, Ford’s online training portal.

At the end of the semester, the dealership will evaluate the students and potentially offer paid internships to one or two students for the summer. It will also pass along these evaluations to other automotive repair shops to see if there is interest in offering additional internships.Ā  Ultimately, the goal is to identify and train technicians that will stay on the Outer Banks.Ā  These technicians can fill a void that exists for all of the local shops.

To register or for additional information on this class, please contact Fay Edwards, COA Workforce Development Coordinator, COA – Dare, atĀ fay_edwards29@albemarle.eduĀ or 252-473-2264, ext. 7024.
