Despite a record-setting performance by junior Mason Dobie, the First Flight Nighthawks were defeated in the third round of the 3A State basketball tournament, falling to No. 1 seed Swansboro by a 76-70 score on March 5.

During the contest, Dobie recorded 56 points and 13 rebounds, concluding an exceptional season with 680 points, 117 rebounds, and 56 assists. The 56 points by Dobie sets a single-game First Flight scoring record, eclipsing the old mark of 51 points by Jack Konstanzer in 2015.

The playoff loss snapped First Flight’s six-game winning streak on the road, but it did not take away from the team’s overall achievements. The team finished the season with an 18-11 record and a 12-2 record in conference play.

Coach Chad Williams told the Voice that “I have never been prouder of a group that I have coachedā€¦These seniors have won a conference championship and went to the 3rd round of the High School playoffs for 3 years in a row and played the hardest schedule of any school in North Carolina. They have left this basketball program in better shape than they found it. More importantly, they are all great kids. It is a privilege to coach them.”
