#OnThisDay in 1867, Wilbur Wright was born!

Wilbur Wright was born on April 16th, 1867. He had two older brothers – Reuchlin and Lorin – and the family spent a few years on a farm near Millville, Indiana before moving to Dayton, Ohio. Dayton became the Wrights’ home, and an influential part of Wilbur’s development.

Wilbur was a curious child, and his mother and father (Susan and Milton) encouraged his curiosity and intellectual development. Will, or “Ullam” to his younger brother and sister, became a scholar and athlete. His favorite subjects were math and science – two subjects that would serve him well in his quest for flight.

He was incredibly close with his younger sister (Katharine) and brother (Orville). In fact, Wilbur and Orville went into business together many times. It was the bicycle shop they ran which sharpened the brothers’ mechanical skills and set them up for their next venture.

Wilbur was introduced to the idea of mechanical flight as a child, and as a young man he found himself passionate about the idea of human flight. He and Orville began their experiments, eventually travelling to the wind-swept dunes of Kitty Hawk in the early 1900s. There, they would find success…. and they would find failure. Both would prove important to their journey toward flight.

Wilbur and Orville’s dauntless resolution and unconquerable faith led to their achievement of the world’s first powered, controlled, sustained, piloted, heavier-than-air flights on December 17, 1903.
