The Manteo varsity softball and baseball teams hosted Camden on Thursday night, May 2, for their final regular season home games.  On the softball diamond, the home team celebrated their lone departing senior, 2nd baseman Sydnee Ballance.  At the baseball field, a ring ceremony was held for the 1974 Manteo baseball team that won the Class A North Carolina State Baseball Championship 50 years ago.

During that 1974 season, the men’s baseball team finished with an overall record of 17 wins and only 4 losses. Its opponent in the championship was Cullowhee High School, and Manteo was able to win in a two-game sweep to claim the title.

As it was not customary during that period, to award rings for such achievements, the Manteo Athletic Department was able to do so Thursday with the help of private donations. Former Head Coach George Pearce, Assistant Coach Terry Wheeler, and each team member took the field for the event.

The former team members honored were Buddy Denton, R.V. Owens, Ken Mann, Richard Bruenig, Steve Daniels, Kenny Kee, Johnny Parrish, Karen Johnston Phillips, Stan Kee, Phillip Etheridge, Robert Heroux, Harry Niser, Mike Buckner, Stan Newman, Mike Parsons, Tom Bill Daniels, Roger Griffith and Greg Roberts, as well as managers Barry Sawyer and Sam Daniels.

The group gathered in the cafeteria prior to the game to eat dinner and reminisce. They then headed to the field to get their Championship rings. For its part, the current Manteo varsity baseball team defeated Camden by a final score of 6-3.
