On the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 3, State Senator Bobby Hanig (R-Currituck) announced that he will run for Congress next year in North Carolina’s 1st Congressional District.
Hanig said, “I am proud to announce my candidacy for United States Congress and the first Congressional District of North Carolina. I’m running because Northeastern North Carolina deserves true conservative leadership that will fight for our community and the America First Agenda.”
Hanig, a Republican small business owner and Army veteran, is serving his second term in the State Senate, representing Bertie, Camden, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans and Tyrell Counties.
He will compete against Rocky Mount Mayor Sandy Roberson in the Republican primary for that U.S. Congressional seat. Don Davis, a Democrat, was elected to that seat in 2024, winning a narrow race by less than two points.
Congressional District 1 includes Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Edgecomb, Gates, Granville, Greene, Halifax, Hertford, Lenoir, Martin, Nash, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell, Vance, Warren, Washington, Wayne and Wilson Counties.
Dare and Hyde Counties are in the 3rd Congressional District, which is currently represented by Congressman Greg Murphy.
In his announcement, Hanig described himself as “a proven leader who has always been a fierce advocate for my constituents and our shared values and beliefs. I will continue that fight when I get to Washington. I believe in President Trump’s America First Agenda and my record in the legislature backs it up. I’ve cut taxes for North Carolina families, toughened border control in the state, stood up for life, and defended our Second Amendment rights.”
After his service in the United States Army, Hanig put down roots in Currituck County, where he has successfully operated his business for more than 25 years. A self-made entrepreneur, he founded two companies and built one from a solo operation into a thriving business serving more than 400 properties on the Outer Banks.
A former Currituck County Commissioner, Hanig was elected to the North Carolina House of Representatives in 2018 after defeating Dare County incumbent Beverly Boswell in the Republican primary and then defeating Democrat Tess Judge in the general election. He was elected to the NC Senate in 2022 after defeating Democrat Valerie Jordan and was victorious again in 2024 in a race against Democrat Susan Harman-Scott.

America First – hmmm let’s see how that’s working out – our longtime closest allies turned away due to tarriffs and disregard for mutual defense treaties (NATO) we’ve had for decades; adversaries joining together with other adversaries to create formidable alliances; allies that have been working with us in the past now looking to join adversarial nations (India); closest neighbors Canada and Mexico looking to expand trade with other nations at the expense of the average American due to tariffs; and the list goes on and on.
Cutting taxes particularlily for the wealthy does not help the average middle class citizen – increases fees for registrations, licenses, legal documents, etc. is passed on because expenses don’t go away – troopers need to paid, universities have to operate, roads have to be built and maintained, etc. I never paid a state tax until McCrory and the GOP took control of the General Assembly – I’ve had to pay since!
