Currituck County will host a number of programs during 2026 as part of America 250, a nationwide initiative to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. These events will have free admission and be open to residents and visitors.
UPDATE, MAY 16: Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Currituck County portion of Betsy Dowdy’s ride will be pre-recorded for the actual event on Saturday, May 20. Please join us for the filming of Betsy Dowdy (Kelly Curry) on her horse, Bess (Chili), as she rides for Currituck! Meet at 10:00 – 10:15 am on Saturday, May 16, at 139 S. Indiantown Road, Shawboro, NC. Guests will meet at the stand where the former corn maze was. Turn left at Roberts Ridge Farm on Rt. 158 onto S. Indiantown Road and it will be on the left. On May 31, a free showing of the one-hour film, The American Constitution, will be held at Currituck Middle School at 2:00 p.m. The film director, David Garrigus, will be present to introduce the film and answer questions. Refreshments will be provided by the Moyock Women’s Club.
The John Jasper White statue will be installed on a date to be determined during the spring or summer on the grounds of the Historic Jarvisburg Colored School. White, known as “Currituck Jack”, was a local Revolutionary War Hero. In addition, PBS will air an episode featuring White in June.
The Currituck Public Library is hosting a 2026 Adult Reading Challenge, “Books Across the USA”. This encourages participants to read a book with a connection to each state during the year and earn raffle tickets for quarterly prizes.
Additional events may be scheduled during the year and details will be posted as programs are finalized.
Throughout 2026, Currituck County is flying the official America 250 flag at public buildings alongside the Currituck County flag, North Carolina state flag, and the flag of the United States of America. In addition, a banner being displayed at each coastal lighthouse in North Carolina includes the county’s tourism logo and Internet links to information and events.

obxserver , that’s a great idea and I suggest you do so. There is plenty written about Betsy D. and plenty of resources to gather information. Here’s a hint, she and her horse swam across the Currituck sound in the middle of the night.
