Jennette’s Pier reopened for fishing and sightseeing on Saturday, April 25. This 1,000-foot-long fishing platform was temporarily off limits to anglers while the old wooden deck boards were replaced with new composite planks made from fiber reinforced polymers (FRP).
Owned and operated by the state, Jennette’s Pier is managed by the Aquariums Division of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
Visitors will be sure to enjoy the new smooth, tan surface that features a light texture that’s designed to endure the harsh elements of sand, salt, water and winds found along the Atlantic Ocean.
“The planks are sand colored, corrosion resistant and feature a light texture for grip,” Director Mike Remige said. “The pier’s public bathhouse deck has been replaced with FRP molded mesh, grated decking and is also open to the public, providing outdoor showers, inside changing areas and restrooms.”
Chip Hemingway of Wilmington, the architect of the original pier as well as this re-planking project, said there are 29,976 linear board feet of 12-inch-wide planks, which he based on area calculations.
Jennette’s Pier blends world-class fishing with educational and community programs, ocean observation and research opportunities, large aquariums, interactive exhibits, restrooms, a Pier Shop, an events space and public beach access.
