A perfect score for Nest 16!

On Sunday, Aug. 30, the Network for Endangered Sea Turtles (NEST) reported that Nest 16 in Nags Head “has a rare by exciting claim to fame.” Of the 114 Green Sea Turtle eggs laid in this nest in late June, all of them—114 hatchlings—emerged and made it to the ocean.

NEST explained that “most of these (78 to be exact) emerged and made a beeline for the water on the 6th night of nest sitting a little after 10 p.m. Over the next few days, a few hatchlings emerged each day. And when the nest was excavated, the final 13 hatchlings were found alive and it was their turn to head to the water.”

According to NEST, which tracks sea turtle nests and hatchlings on the Northern Outer Banks, just under 1,800 hatchlings have emerged to date this season. General 3 — Network for Endangered Sea Turtles
