Southern Shores Planning Board Special Meeting – Wednesday, September 2, 2026 at 1 p.m. in the Pitts Center located at 5377 N. Virginia Dare Trl., Southern Shores, NC. The purpose of the Special Meeting is for the Board, performing the duties of the Southern Shores Board of Adjustment, to hold an evidentiary hearing (limited to sworn, factual testimony) to consider VA-2026-01, a Variance application submitted by Anthony S. Mina to seek relief from Town Code Section 36-102, Town Code Section 36-202(b)(2), and Town Code Section 36-202(d) to allow an accessory structure with a dwelling unit with up to 6,000 sq. ft. of enclosed living space on the property located at 75 E. Dogwood Trl. The application also seeks relief from Town Code Section 30-96(f) and Town Code Section 36-202(d) to allow a subdivision of the property located at 75 E. Dogwood Trl.
Currituck County Board of Commissioners Special Meeting – Thursday, September 3, 2026 at 5:30 p.m., Knotts Island Elementary School, 413 Woodleigh Road, Knotts Island. Members of the Currituck County Board of Commissioners will attend a listening session hosted by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to receive citizen comments regarding the potential tolling of the Currituck/Knotts Island Ferry. The Board will consider adoption of a joint Resolution opposing NCDOT’s proposed tolls on ferry routes in North Carolina.
NCDOT Ferry Division to hold public ‘listening sessions’ on controversial ferry tolling plan – Sept. 8 from 6-8 p.m. at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, 59200 Museum Drive, Hatteras • And Sept. 9 from 6-8 p.m. – Ocracoke School, 120 Schoolhouse Road, Ocracoke. NCDOT’s Ferry Division has announced it will hold five public listening sessions in September as it moves to put the ferry tolling plan new state budget into effect. The budget requires the Ferry Division to begin tolling all untolled routes by Jan. 1, 2027. It also requires the establishment of a $150 annual pass to be made available to permanent residents of 20 North Carolina coastal counties. The NCDOT Ferry Division has scheduled the public listening sessions in communities close to the ferries where the new tolling requirement will be imposed. “During the listening sessions, people can learn more and let division staff know their thoughts and concerns about the tolling requirement,” the announcement said. Locally, one session will be held on Hatteras on Sept. 8 and another on Ocracoke on Sept. 9. Click here for more information and the full schedule of meetings.
