September 5 Update: The National Weather Service at Newport/Morehead City reports there is a slight risk of strong to severe thunderstorms across much of eastern NC today, focused on the afternoon and evening hours. Like yesterday, the threat will progress from northwest to southeast. Damaging winds are the most likely threat, but some isolated large hail is also possible.
September 4: Once again, the National Weather Service at Newport/Morehead City has issued a Heat Advisory, this time for Friday, Sept. 4 from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. for parts of Eastern North Carolina—including Mainland Dare and Hyde Counties and the Northern Outer Banks.
Heat Index Values up to 109 degrees are expected, with the NWS warning that hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses. The Weather Service is also forecasting the possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms in our region from 4 p.m. to midnight on Friday. Damaging winds of up to 60 miles an hour are possible.
But the good news is that relief appears to be on the way. According to a statewide forecast of maximum temperatures from the National Weather Service in Raleigh, it will remain hot for our region on Saturday, with maximum temperatures expected in the high 80’s.
According that forecast, however, lower maximum temperatures on the Outer Banks— that hover around 80 or the low 80’s—will start on Sunday and last for at least several days.
