Mary Christine Downing, beloved daughter of Bill and Tina Downing, went home to her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
Mary was born on February 13, 1970, in Honolulu, HI. She lived in the Richmond, VA area for most of her adult life, where she enjoyed walking, bike riding, nature, traveling, and teaching her students. Mary was also a great lover of literature and film and had a great sense of humor.
Mary earned her Master of Arts in English from Virginia Commonwealth University. She was an Assistant Professor of English at Southside Virginia Community College.
She is survived by her mother, Tina Downing, of Southern Shores, NC; her sister, Elizabeth Gray (Scott); and her brother, William Downing (Lauren). In addition, she leaves behind her most beloved niece and nephews, whom she adored to pieces, Jacob and Joshua Gray, along with Will, Nora, Foster, and Harry Downing. Mary is also survived by several aunts, uncles, and cousins whom she loved dearly.
Mary will peacefully join her father, Bill Downing, her grandparents, aunt, and cousins in Heaven.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Grace Lutheran Church in Nags Head, NC.
