OBX Visitors Bureau 2nd Annual Volunteer Week

The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau is excited to announce the 2nd Annual Outer Banks Volunteer Week, taking place October 10-17, 2026.

This initiative invites visitors, residents and second homeowners to connect more deeply with the community by volunteering with local organizations on a variety of projects and events. Part of the Bureau’s expanding year round Voluntourism program, Volunteer Week aims to support local partners, promote off-season visitation to Dare County and highlight the ongoing work that goes into caring for and sustaining the Outer Banks.

“Outer Banks Volunteer Week is a tremendous opportunity for people to give back to a place they care deeply about,” said Lee Nettles, Executive Director of the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau. “Whether you live here, vacation here or own a home here, you’re part of this community. We invite everyone to lend a hand and support the nonprofit organizations that do so much to make the Outer Banks a special place.”

    The OBX Visitor Bureau Sustainable Tourism Initiative has produced nothing except repeated efforts to coerce exhausted locals into picking up even more tourist trash than we already have to pick up.

    Not A Tourist,

    Don’t blame the Tourism Board AKA Visitors Bureau. It’s like the fable about The Scorpion and the Frog. It just in their nature.

    The Tourism Board was created by Boss Basnight and enacted into state law to do one thing and one thing only, promote tourism in Dare County. It’s like a runaway train. The law does not include any throttle control or off switch. Locals are on the train and we can see what is happening but we can’t stop it.

    Like the Frog, locals are the ones doing all the work but we are the ones who get stung every time.
