Historian Kevin P. Duffus brings a remarkable and often-overlooked chapter of Outer Banks history to life on November 2

The historic Pioneer Theater in downtown Manteo will host a special evening of Outer Banks history on Monday, November 2, 2026, at 7:00 PM, featuring historian and author Kevin P. Duffus and an engaging presentation on inventor Reginald Fessenden and the origins of American radio on North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

Long before wireless communication became an essential part of everyday life, groundbreaking experiments were taking place along the North Carolina coast. Reginald Fessenden was a pioneering inventor whose work helped advance the development of wireless voice and signal transmission, forever changing the way people communicate.

During this special presentation, Duffus will explore Fessenden’s remarkable story, his connection to Dare County and the Town of Manteo, and the radio experiments conducted along the Outer Banks. The evening will offer guests an opportunity to discover a fascinating chapter of local history that is often overshadowed by other historic achievements associated with the region.

The program will also examine efforts from an earlier generation to recognize Fessenden’s accomplishments and preserve his connection to the Outer Banks, bringing renewed attention to a story with both local significance and a much broader place in the history of communications.

“This is exactly the kind of story we want to help bring to life at The Pioneer Theater,” said Michael Basnight. “The Outer Banks is filled with extraordinary history, and some of its most fascinating stories are the ones that have remained largely untold. We are excited to welcome Kevin Duffus and invite our community to learn more about the remarkable work that took place right here on our coast.”

The presentation is designed for history enthusiasts, local residents, educators, students, community leaders, and anyone interested in discovering another extraordinary connection between the Outer Banks and innovations that helped shape the modern world.

THE PIONEER THEATER is located in the heart of downtown Manteo, The Pioneer Theater has been part of the Outer Banks community since 1918. Today, the historic theater continues its tradition of bringing people together through movies, live entertainment, special events, and programs celebrating the history and culture of the Outer Banks.
