Edna Diane Stoneman Moore lost her battle with dementia on September 27, 2026 at her daughter‘s home in Currituck, North Carolina. She was 80 years old.
Diane was born in the mountains of Virginia to the late Malcolm and Mae Stoneman. She graduated from Woodlawn school. In addition to her parents, Diane was preceded in death by her brother, Ronnie Stoneman.
After graduation, Diane left Carroll County for the big city and landed in Lynchburg, Virginia, where she remained for almost 50 years. She attended beauty school and began her career in cosmetology. After graduating, she devoted much of her life, almost 45 years, to being the best beautician she could be. She served on the State Board of Cosmetology in Virgina and attended numerous continuing education classes at Virginia Tech. Diane was hard-working and had a tremendous work ethic- qualities that stayed with her throughout her life. After retirement, she returned to Austinville to live with and care for her beloved Momma.
Diane loved plants and flowers and spent countless hours in her yard, bringing dying plants back to life. She shared fresh cuttings from her yard with everyone. She truly had a green thumb!
Diane had a wonderful sense of humor and was always ready to share a joke and a smile. She loved to have fun, leaving her family with countless memories and stories. Those who knew Diane may also remember the personal cards! Birthdays, holidays and other special occasions never passed without a card from her. It was one of the many simple ways she made sure the people she cared about knew she loved them.
Diane had a lifelong obsession with Elvis. While her granddaughter would lovingly tell you that singing may not have been one of her Grammy’s greatest talents, that never stopped her! Music remained an important part of Diane‘s life, especially in her later years. It always put a smile on her face and made her feel the boogie.
Diane will be remembered in many ways, but most importantly as Momma, Grammy, and Dee. She loved her family and the Lord fiercely. Left to cherish her memory are her son, James Anthony “Tony” Moore; her daughter, Jamie Diane Moore Waugh; her son-in-law Stuart Waugh; and her most cherished grandchildren, Emma Rhea and Nolan Anthony Waugh.
We would like to send a very special shout out, along with our love and gratitude, to Albemarle Hospice and most especially, to Donna, Gloria and Chloe. Their care, skill, and compassion were so important, so needed, and very much appreciated!
A celebration of Diane’s life will be held on Sunday, October 4, at 2:00 PM at the Bells Island Clubhouse, located at 582 Bells Island Road, Currituck, NC 27929
